History
Power of Two began in the head of Dr. Susan Heitler, PhD and developed out of 20+ years of helping hundreds of couples in her private practice remember why they chose to marry their spouse in the first place. She believes deeply that great therapy isn’t a permanent crutch… it should teach people the skills to walk on their own feet, lovingly, together.
In 2006, Dr. Heitler’s son, Jesse Heitler accompanied her to a Smart Marriages conference to help her sell her books on marriage. He realized then that as the marriage experts were getting older, the people getting married were staying the same age. Having recently sold another business that provided online English language teachers from South Africa, Jesse was looking for a new entrepreneurial opportunity. He decided to start a business teaching marriage communication skills targeted for the digital era.
Pretty quickly, Jesse recruited Daniel Berson who was acting and working in museum education in NYC. Daniel’s comic timing and creativity were a perfect compliment to Jesse’s technical expertise.
In 2007, Dr. Heitler’s daughter, Dr. Abigail Hirsch, PhD joined the team by initially helping to secure a 5 year grant to create online marriage education products from the Federal Department of Health and Human Services under their Healthy Marriages Initiative.
Having secured the company’s first large source of revenue, and having the most appropriate skill set for leadership, everyone agreed to make Abigail the company’s CEO. Although the company believes in using our PO2 communication skills to build consensus, Abigail keeps all the troops marching in the same direction.
Having developed a reputation for online educational materials, in 2008, Power of Two secured a pilot with The Gap Inc (The Gap, Banana Repulic, & Old Navy) to develop digital internal sales associate training. Realizing that the business had the potential to create effective corporate education materials, Power of Two changed its name to Torque Interactive Media Inc, and made Power of Two a product line of the larger innovative digital training company.
In an attempt to expand the scope of the business, in 2008 the team approached the 3rd of Dr. Heitler’s four children, Jacob Heitler. Jacob was completing his MBA at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley at the time, and began consulting originally on a part time basis. Upon graduating, Jacob joined the company as the final founding partner.
Torque Interactive Media Inc and the Power of Two continue to expand in new and fruitful directions. The company continues to innovate as it develops engaging interpersonal and corporate educational materials.
